Pol Pot got his bombs from the Industrial system. He was a failed technician become teacher, guerilla leader, dictator, ally of the Reagan-Thatcher axis, diplomatic liability and finally prisoner. His shack was luxurious compared with the accomodation reserved for his victims many of whom were worked to death.
Theodore lived alone. Pol Pot was married with an attractive daughter. Theodore had become a surplus mathematicien in the system he despised, but never really set out to destroy. He did not do well at 'team-work', nor did he train kids to make bombs. His main goal seeemed just to get in the letters column of the reputable newspapers.
Pol Pot achieved revolution. Pol Pot's dream was the sharpest end of the China's Maoist Cultural Revolution. Pol Pot was definitely a 'leftist' in the Unabomber's book, and therefore a sufferer of all the delusions of leftism.
Pol Pot left no manifesto, and attempted to leave no survivors. He is quoted as saying that his only regret was not having been sufficiently ruthless in dealing with his enemies. Pol Pot was put on trial in a jungle clearing, and forced to recant his crimes. He had been waging a losing war for almost twenty years. He had just fallen out with one of his most loyal cammanders, and had him executed. After that he had had the wife and children crushed under the wheels of a heavy truck.
Pol Pot's trial was witnessed by child soldiers too young to have much memory of the killing fields of the 1970s. The most vicious revolutionaries are those who seek to obliterate the current adult generation, and use the next generation to do so. Mao Dze Dong's Cultural Revolution is the classic example.
The Unabomber calls for a revolution against technology. His aims have been parodied on a badge worn in the 1980s by German power station workers. The ecologists used to wear a badge with a shining sun and the words 'KERNKRACHT NEIN DANKE'. The logo was replaced with a man clad in skins, brandishing a club. The text said 'STEIN ZEIT NEIN DANKE'.
The Unabomber Manifesto is an offer for the human race to return to the 'Stone Age'. Even Pol Pot was unable to do that. His wooden hut had been cut with mechanical tools. Noise pollution was bad at times, with artillary duels every so often.
The Unabomber hand crafted his own weapons. Pol Pot never had such difficulty. There was a always a queue of people willing to arm the Khmer Rouge.
The Unabomber complained of noise pollution in his manifesto. Power saws and portable generators disturbed his concentration.
The young electronics technician from Cambodia was on a government scholarship to Paris and he seems to have formed links with French leftists. It is rumoured that Vierges, the lawyer who defended Klaus Barbie was a colleague from student days. German and Japanese aggression were seen as predictable aberrations of capitalism in the Cold-War world.
When called on the French left would take to the streets of Paris. It is a tradition of the French capital which is still celebrated in towns which have streets named after the Paris Commune. This gloriously suicidal venture is seen as one of the defining land marks of class struggle.

After the French army and its mercenary contingents from the last European war were utterly defeated at Dien Bien Phu the Americans had stepped in and supposedly bought the regime, or at least half of it. This reversed the policy of the French who had imposed unity on Viet-Nam. Despite the fact that Viet-Nam had never really been unified before French colonialisation the enlightened local politicians saw the advantages of unification with railways, transport, power stations, and the rest of the modern world.

Dislike of corruption both at home and abroad motivated many of the students. Even middle class students whose parents voted Republican could refer to former president Eisenhower's condemnation of the 'military industrial complex'. Besides going on the streets the American student's publicised the involvement of 'The Great and the Good' of the corporate elite in financing the war.
More to the point the Americans had got themselves into the problem of 'the draft'. Some students who did not really want to make a fuss and demonstrate on the streets might get orders from the state to go and fight in Viet-Nam. And American boys were getting killed out there.
Other draftees just got jobs in government weapons laboratories doing more or less what they would do at university in any case. Conformal mappings can be used to solve problems in fluid mechanics and so on. Theodore Kaczynski turned from abstract to practical. Blowing off someone's limbs became more than the theory of shockwave propagation for him. These explosives were meant to detonate as anti-personnel mines to get at the morale of those running the system. He targeted Universities and Airlines becoming known as the UNABOMBER. He was well aware that much of the 'big science' budget was funded by supporters of the Lawrence Livermore labs whose bosses went on to con the Reagan-Thatcher clique out of billions of dollars for the Star-Wars program. As an obvious social misfit Theodore Kaczynski could not really attract funding in the same way.
The nuclear mafia effectively sold their bosses the dagger to the heart for 'The Evil Empire'. The ground had been softened up by the Hollywood epic called Star-Wars where a single death star could wipe out an entire planet in one shot. A former Hollywood actor called Ronald Reagan paid the weapons labs billions and billions of dollars just like so many previous American presidents. There are still people who go around claiming it was a tremendous success to bankrupt the former Soviet Union, get it to split up into various mutually antagonistic states, and then give the local mafias the moral support to bankrupt their own people.
Reagan had been neither a friend of academic freedem or Afros. But he still gave money to nuclear research, just like the enemies of 'democracy' in China. The friends of academic freedom just gave the secrets, but not the technological infrastructure, of nuclear weapons to the Chinese. The Chinese still had to pay people to make the weapons. Next would be expensive deployment and missile systems.
When nuclear secrets leaked to the Russians the Americans executed Jews for it. Worse still, they did not gas the Rosenburgs, but they executed them by the more painful method of electric current. The American electric chair was a forerunner of the slow electric toaster that the CIA gave to SAVAK, the secret police of the Shah of Iran.
The Chinese just got former students from the USA to come and work on their own nuclear programme. There was perhaps some collusion with the Americans in arming a potential enemy of the USSR with nuclear weapons. It's certainly true that the first institutions to get the internet in China were government nuclear weapons labs. The scientists did share a lot of values in common as can be seen from the way their children demonstrated in the streets in 1989. Corruption and imperialism in Tibet or South East Asia does not have the enthusiastic support of the thinking classes.
