ULSTER SCENES

Ulster is well served with airports, and despite all the adverse publicity it's a nice place for a quiet holiday. The only problem is the weather.

HOW WE LOST AMERICA

The author was passing by Carrekfergus Castle to play chess, and decided to take advantage of a photo opportunity. Prime ministers, american presidents, and various other outsiders will achieve little more than this.

ANTRIM COAST

This photo is taken near the Giant's Causeway, County Antrim.

GIANT'S CAUSWAY

This outcrop of basaltic columns is world famous. Samuel Johnson's remark, "It is worth seeing, but not worth going to see" has only added to its attraction.

ANTRIM COAST

The coast shows many interesting geological features. Basaltic intrusions are mixed with cretaceous chalk layers, so Ulster could export construction materials to the rest of the world.

VIEW FROM GIANT'S CAUSEWAY

No doubt the road builders cast a covetous eye over this piece of rock.

VIEW FROM ANTRIM COAST TOWARDS DONEGAL

On a clear day it is possible to see the hills of Donegal in the distance. A modern tourism industry has already developed in the area with fairgrounds at Portrush, and raves at the nearby Kelly's bar. For those who do not mind the near freezing temperatures of the sea, surfing is a possibility.

MOURNES, CO. DOWN

The Mourne mountains are the highest range in Northern Ireland, and they can easily be seen from Belfast on a clear day. Often the tops of the hills hide behind clouds, just as islamic ladies hide their faces from all but their families.

MOURNE WALL

This wall of stones encircles the catchment area for the municipal water supply. It extends for miles, and is about two metres high. Energetic joggers will think nothing of running the whole length of the wall. It was built at the beginning of the twentieth century.

NEWCASTLE BAY

At the foot of Slieve Donard, the highest of the Mournes lies Newcastle. This view shows the bay, and sand dunes in the distance. On most days the people of the town cannot see the top of the mountain.

GLEN RIVER

Running down the mountain to Newcastle is a watercourse named the Glen River. Much of the vegetation is a recent addition, and includes the Rhododendron from India. The beautiful scenery of Ulster is one of the best kept secrets of the UK.

SLIEVE BERNAGH

The rocky summit of this mountain makes it one of the most pleasing to visit.
